Du Iz Tak? by Carson Ellis

This week we  talked about Wordless Books .  I showed them several examples.  To find them in the library catalog, the subject heading is Stories without Words. We talked about who and why we would “read” books without words.  We then “read”  Du IZ Tak?  which is similar to a wordless book in that there are no words which we understand, so we need to use our imagination to figure out what is going on in the story.

First we looked at the pictures and then we translated the nonsense words. Next we read Oops Pounce Quick Run! An alphabet caper by Mike Twohy , which has only one word on each page. This also required us to use our imagination to figure out what is going on. Students then took a copy of a page and wrote a complete sentence to tell the story. We put the pages together to make a book for the classroom.

Flora and the Flamingo

We  read the last of the books which have been nominated for the Buckeye Children’s Book Award. This week we “read”  Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle. This is a wordless book so we watched the video of the book with background music,  Flora and the Flamingo Demo and then talked about what is going on in the story.  Afterward, the students voted for their favorite Buckeye Award Nominee.
