Violet Mackerel’s Natural Habitat

This week for Earth Day, we read the first two chapters of Violet Mackerel’s Natural habitat by Anna Branford, illustrated by Elanna Allen.  In the story Violet makes a habitat for a small ladybug.

While reading, we talked  about idioms including what “making ends meet” and “bills going through the roof” meant.  Later in the story we talked about what a habitat is and what is necessary to have in it.  Both concepts were covered in their classrooms earlier in the year.  We then ended by talking about where we could get good information about ladybugs in order to make a new habitat (books in the library using the catalog and databases – online encyclopedia).

Buddy files Series

This  week we talked about ways to select books.  How do we find books that we are interested in reading? We started by watching the BrainpopJr. video called Choosing a Book (see link below).  One of the suggestions was to find another book in the same series. We talked about what a series is (books which share several similar traits, such as Author, Main Characters and Genre/Type of Book) and then read the first book in the The Buddy Files series, which is The Case of the  Lost Boy by Dori Hillestad Butler.

Library Catalog – Series

This week we read this year’s Geisel Honor Book Mr. Putter and Tabby Turn the Page by Cynthia Rylant. We reviewed  what a Series is and then demonstrated how we can use the catalog to find books in a series.  We also looked at the catalog results to see which books were available and which books were not on the shelf.

The story is about reading to pets in a library.  To view a video about reading to pets and information about Reading to Pets in the Library programs, check out my resources for this book –  Mr. Putter & Tabby Turn the Page
