Juana and Lucas

This past week we read Juana and Lucas by Juana Medina, the winner of this year’s  Pura Belpre Award.  The award is for a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth .

Before reading, we talked about ways to figure out words we don’t know (look at pictures, figure out what makes sense, look it up in a dictionary).  We talked about how these would help us figure out the Spanish words sprinkled throughout the story.  Students were encouraged to guess out loud the meaning of words as we came upon them and I had post its with the meanings on the back.  After reading we talked about the fact that many of the Spanish words were similar to the English word.

Little Roja Riding Hood – Pura Belpre Award

This past week we listened to the 2015 Pura Belpre Award Winner- Little Roja Riding Hood by Susan Middleton Elya and illustrated by Susan Guevara.

We talked about this award, which is given to an author and illustrator whose work best portrays and celebrates the Latino culture.  Before reading the story, we summarized the traditional version of Little Red Riding Hood. Since there were many Spanish words in the story, we talked about how to figure out new words when we are reading (look for clues in the pictures, context in the sentence, similar to words we know) and how we could use these same strategies when reading this book.   We listened to an audio made by our ESL ( English as a Second Language) teacher, who speaks Spanish.
