This past week we read Juana and Lucas by Juana Medina, the winner of this year’s Pura Belpre Award. The award is for a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth .
Before reading, we talked about ways to figure out words we don’t know (look at pictures, figure out what makes sense, look it up in a dictionary). We talked about how these would help us figure out the Spanish words sprinkled throughout the story. Students were encouraged to guess out loud the meaning of words as we came upon them and I had post its with the meanings on the back. After reading we talked about the fact that many of the Spanish words were similar to the English word.
