This week we are preparing for our second book fair of the school year. During classroom’s library time, we show the book fair video. While it is a sort of advertisement to promote the book fair, it does include booktalks by the author themselves and includes how they came up with the ideas for writing the story as well as talks by the illustrators telling us about how they made the illustrations. For decorations, I recruited our art teacher to help. She had a group of students who were interested in making some of the decorations themselves. This time the theme was a fiesta. Scholastic provides ideas, which are always helpful. Scholastic also provides flyers to send home with the students. I customize them by printing labels with the dates and times and get volunteers to put them on each flyer. They rubberband them in stacks to give to each of the classroom teachers to send home the week before.
Once the book fair is delivered, we number the posters in the box and pull one of each, which we put the number on it using post-its. We have a large picture window in the library, where I drape a clothesline and clothes pin the posters for students to see. They simply order the poster # they want and we get it for them out of the box. On Friday, parent volunteers will come help set up the books on the tables and open the cases around the library.
